190310_artcalendar.jpg The gallery scene has settled down a bit from last weekend, but Houstonist knows you didn't go see everything you meant to. Openings (and closings) are still going to be around town, and with all the on-going shows, there's plenty to keep busy with. Rice Design Alliance has organized a self-guided tour of the city's Southgate neighborhood for those who want to stay out in the nice weather and get to know the city a little better. There's also the Houston Downtown Alliance's Dowtown Home Tour and Aurora Picture Show's outdoor screening of a "documentary fiction" focused on Yves Klein to keep you in the fresh, warm-weather-is-great-but-please-don't-let-it-get-scorching-hot-too-soon air.

Suchu Dance's Ella Paradise premieres tonight at Barnevelder Theater and will run for the next two weekends. Suchu's Artistic Director Jennifer Wood has been working with a team of eleven dancers to create the new piece, which, when viewed from the theater's elevated in-the-round seating, highlights the intricate pattern-weaving maneuvers of the performers on the floor. Though Suchu is a contemporary dance company, the show is dressed in old-fashioned charm, evoking a sense of familiarity and reminiscence in the audience through its costuming and music as it progresses through what feels like a choreographed daydream. more ›

For the weekend of March 18th - 21st, 2010 While we may be up in Austin this weekend, that doesn't mean we took the music with us. There's an avalanche of shows in good ol' H-town, so go see a few and help some of the touring bands make a buck or two. Life on the road is tough, folks. more ›

What a glorious day for some stout! Yeah, we know "Green Beer...blah, blah", you want green beer? Head to the nearest A&P and buy food coloring, tote it to the bar with you. If the water in the toilet is a weird color after you unload a pint or two, it's the F,D & C "whatever" color, really. more ›

Houston, here's your chance to nominate your spouse, friend, family member or co-worker who needs help in the kitchen! If you know someone who only brings the sporks to potluck dinners or has never put a palatable plate of grub in front of you - nominate them for the show. Food Network is coming to Houston on March 21st to select new cast members for Season Two of the show, Worst Cooks in America. If you haven't seen the show before, you can find out more information here. Effectively, two acclaimed chefs will bravely attempt to guide/teach persons who don't cook well through an elimination series. The last two contestants standing will cook for a panel of culinary critics and the winner nets $25,000. more ›

Welcome to yet another installation of Rock Talk! It's been too long, but we have to blame our day job for that transgression. In the meantime, Houstonist has a boatload and then some of music news for you all. Someone find us a bigger boat. more ›

For the week of March 15th - 17th, 2010 As the Space City Rock showlist says, 'Welcome to Hell.' We don't even have a word to accurately describe the plethora of music that will hit Houston this week. Actually, plethora is pretty good, but it doesn't really do justice to the devastating avalanche of live shows that will sweep across our landscape over the next seven days. Don't get us wrong, Houstonist loves the SXSW fallout - it brings us many bands that otherwise would never set foot in the state, much less our fair city [e.g. the all-Aussie lineup at the Mink on Tuesday]. We'll try to give some details where we can, but know that the default option for the week will be Super Happy Fun Land's Overflow Fest [note each show is $8, or you can shell out $25 and hit any show through March 24th]. more ›

  • Gothamist had its fill of salt-related news: There was "salty" Eric Massa's resignation and "snorkeling" allegations and then a NY lawmaker's proposal to ban salt.

As the Astros continue to prepare for the 2010 major league season, two local municipalities are making their own preparations for baseball. Sugar Land and Montgomery County are both in the process of exploring the idea of bringing minor league baseball to the greater Houston area. So what would this look like, and what would it mean for fans? more ›
