For the Weekend of July 2nd - July 5th, 2009

woodenbirds.jpg Queue the mother lode. It's the Fourth of July weekend, so we're certain there will be a plethora of booze, burgers, brats, and of course, bands. We'll avoid traveling back in time to 6th grade choir [yeah, we said it, we have no shame] and skip the Arena Theatre show tonight. We plan to fill our slow jam quota at Walter's instead, where Austin's The Wooden Birds will be stopping, but if you've got other plans you can catch them at Cactus this afternoon.

If you're a disgruntled youth, then we expect you to be in the sweltering Texas sun at Sam Houston Race Park on Friday. As tempting as the sweat of a few thousand teenagers sounds, we'd rather just dance our ass off at Boondocks. It's been a while since we've seen Dave Wrangler in action.

Saturday is the big day. There's a festival/showcase/etc. for you somewhere in all of that mess, so find it and go. We don't really care where you wind up, but if you're keen on buying us a beer or burger, plan on hanging out downtown for the Texas Heat Music Festival. Afterward, we'll drag our sure-to-be sunburnt and drunk self to Super Happy Fun Land for The Tontons [two words: seriously good], but we think that show at The Mink will be pretty sweet as well. Then on Sunday, post-brunch and mimosa-drunk [at Rivas they're bottomless], we'll head back downtown for THMF to catch, among others, Warbler PL, Ben Wesley, The Gold Sounds, Bird Peterson, and Female Demand.

It doesn't matter who you see, but for the love of music, go see something this weekend! Let us know in the comments where you're going to be.

Behind the Scenes at Millionaire Auditions

Millionaire?" As a bonus, show hopefuls were also being considered for Millionaire's 10th Anniversary week (hosted by Regis) and their movie week, which features only movie trivia. As for the question, "who wants to be a millionaire?" Houstonist, and over 1,000 other Houstonians, said "Um...hello. We do! We do!"

Houston Gets It On - A Lot!

Houstonians, we are number one! Yes, yes, ooooooh YES! Ahead of the other "major cities" and not due to our BMI indexes. Rather, our favorite way to burn off some calories, or just to relax after a hard day at the keyboard. Sex. The never-ending heat wave does have us thinking in terms of indoor activities, just saying. Houstonians have more sex, lots more, than our friends in Atlanta (who ranked second) and Dallas? Forget Dallas, numero 8 on the list. Yep, according to a recent study conducted by Trojan, we have sex an average of 101 times per year, or one and a half times per week (well, on average, as half-sex doesn't really "count", as recent history proves). Atlanta shows up second at 88 times per year.

Researchers Project Galveston Could Be Underwater Next Century

Recent projections from Texas A&M researcher, Dr. David Yoskowitz, show the ocean could rise 1.5 meters (about five feet) within the next 100 years. This would leave only the area built up around the seawall above water.

What the futsal?

063009_futsal.jpg
Another thing to add to the Houston diversity list: a futsal facility. What exactly is futsal? Well, we’re glad you asked. Think soccer, but abbreviated. According to Wikipedia, futsal is soccer with 5 people on each side, one being the goaltender. It’s played on a hard court with a smaller ball with less bounce. It is also usually played indoors. That is, except the facility recently opened in Houston…

Daily-ist Tuesday: Pilates in the Park

You know how Bikram yoga is usually performed in a room heated to 105 degrees with a 40% humidity? Kinda like how Houston hash been, oh, just about every day this month? We could have our very own naturally ambient version of Bikram pilates at Discovery Green tonight with Pilates in the Park.

Houstonist Cooks: Stuffed Burgers

Many of us will be firing up the grill this weekend for the traditional 4th of July fare. If you want to try something a little fancier than the usual hamburgers and hot dogs, we've got just the recipe. These burgers with a surprise in the middle are easy to prepare and can be modified to suit your tastes. We provide you with some combos which you can add to for your own culinary masterpiece.

What was here? 7575 Kirby edition

You may have noticed the condominiums on the northeast corner of Kirby at North Braeswood - 7575 Kirby and the Brentwood directly behind it - or if you're like us, you probably noticed the smell more than anything. Anyhow, this corner of prime real estate used to be really prime waterfront property owned by Rice University (then Rice Institute), who sold it to Glenn McCarthy in 1935. His estate, Glennlee, was completed by 1938 and designed by Milton McGinty (of River Oaks Shopping Center, Holland Lodge on Montrose, Rice Stadium, Cuney Homes, Cossaboom YMCA on the South Loop East).

Washington Ave. nightlife update

There hasn't been much new to report since we heard about obnoxious club-goers leaving their mark along Washington Ave. near Sixth Ward, but locals down west on Washington are dealing with the same 'ol stuff. This beauty of a parking job comes from a residence near Ei8ht (clever!). I guess there aren't any ditches in the 'burbs..

H-Town Rock

For the Week of June 29th - July 1st, 2009 In case you were wondering, we made it out of Friday alive and had a great weekend along the way. Now, let's get down to the business of getting down this week.
