Singer-songwriter Chris Whitley died Sunday in Houston. The 45-year-old was born in Houston but called various cities home throughout his career, including his last residence in New York City. The cause of death has not been publicized, but his tour schedule was canceled earlier this year because of complications with lung cancer.
Chris created a sound of his own with his mix of blues and rock, his guitar playing and personal lyrics. He flirted with mainstream success with his 1991 debut album Living With The Law, which received local radio airplay with the title track (the album also contains a favorite of Houstonist's, “Big Sky Country.”) He also received critical acclaim for his edgy 1998 album Dirt Floor.
His music will be missed. Before his illness, Chris Whitley recorded Reiter In, which will be released on vinyl next month, on CD next year.
