Weekend sports extra

120405_horns.jpg• Most of us weren't surprised that the No. 2 Texas Longhorns beat the Colorado Buffaloes in the Big 12 Championship game at Reliant Stadium on Saturday. What was a surprise was the score: 70-3. The decisive victory gives the 'Horns their first Big 12 title since 1996 and gives them a chance to earn their first undisputed national championship since 1969. But at this point, the 'Horns might want to think less about flashing roses in their teeth and more about keeping the Trojans from knocking their teeth out.

• In college basketball, the big news was the Houston Cougars' 69-65 victory over the No. 15 Arizona Wildcats. It's the upstart Coogs' second consecutive win over a ranked team — they beat No. 25 LSU 84-83 on Tuesday. It's also the first time UH has beat back-to-back ranked opponents since 1984, when they were on their way to the Big Dance. It's early to predict a return to the glory days for the Cougars, but the season should be fun to watch. In other news, Rice defeated the previously undefeated Utah 96-94 in the third OT.

• The Rockets, uh, well ... they lost. Again. The team welcomed the Memphis Grizzlies to town by posting just 26 points in the first half of Saturday's game. Maybe they thought it was golf? A very brief scoring run at the end of the game did nothing to disguise how disappointing the night was — final score: 90-75.

• High school football playoff action: Katy beats Cy-Falls 32-28 ... La Marque falls to Brenham 41-31 ... Converse Judson squeaks past Westfield 17-14 ... Northland Christian drops state final to Plano Prestonwood 46-14

Update: The Texans dropped a heartbreaker today in Baltimore, 16-15 — the Ravens won with a field goal in the last six seconds of the game. Augh!
