Slainte! And stay warm

Bitterly cold weather is setting upon Houston for the next week. This gives Houstonist a great excuse to sit at home by the fireplace and sip some Irish Coffee – but we’ll prepare it the true, simple Irish way:

1 jigger of Irish Whiskey

2 teaspoons of Sugar

Fresh Hot Coffee

Fresh Cream

Rinse your glass with boiling water, so it is good and hot to start with. Add your Whiskey, Sugar & Coffee. Stir. Using the back of a spoon, slowly pour the cream so it sets on top of the mixture.

Do not stir the cream into the coffee. Traditionally, this is best sipped through the cream. The fresher the cream you can buy, the better, too.

Ah, refreshing! Being near the Gulf Coast, we’re not all blessed with fireplaces in our homes, so you can enjoy your coffee at one of these restaurants and bars that are well equipped. The Black Labrador and Red Lion Pub are great starts, but if you’re fine without a fireplace, we also recommend enjoying your spiked coffee at one of these Irish pubs:
