It beats a Yugo

Not only did we learn that the city is looking at expanding its fleet of hybrid vehicles, but that Mayor Bill White drives a hybrid (Toyota Prius) himself. It kind of makes us green with envy. Sorry, had to say it.

051218-prius.jpgWe applaud the city’s efforts to not clog the air with more pollution than we already have. However, we ask ourselves if this is the right time for the City of Houston to be making the switch to hybrid vehicles? Many pros and cons have been written about the current hybrids available. Also, the price tag and repair costs are still higher than gasoline power cars, but we know that will change over time.

We know that gasoline-powered vehicles are on their way out, even though it may take decades for the full transition. We also know that hybrid vehicles have a way to go meet all of the performance standards most Houstonians are used to. Honestly, Houstonist dreams of the day when we all have flying cars.
