Houston 'Walk of Fame' taking shape

122305_walkofame.jpgIn the holiday rush this week, we didn't notice an article in the Chronicle about Houston's proposed "Walk of Fame" (which actually doesn't have an official name yet). The walk, which will begin at the Wortham Center and extend east along Texas Avenue to Minute Maid Park, then south along Avenida de las Americas to Toyota Center, then back west along Polk, will "honor people and things that have taken the city to national and international levels." But it doesn't sound as though it'll be much like the Walk of Fame in Hollywood:

To create the master plan and first piece of art, the alliance has selected Electroland (electroland.net), a Los Angeles-based partnership that specializes in cutting-edge interactive installations.

In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for instance, the group recently unveiled heat-sensitive breezeways whose floors light up in target patterns as people walk over them.

For the Southern California Institute of Architecture, the group put colored lights in 81 windows and allowed cell-phone callers from any location to control the patterns created.

Sounds interesting. We hope it doesn't end up being one of those things that's cool at first, but quickly breaks and never gets fixed (like the button on the Preston Avenue bridge that once made a giant bubble come out of Buffalo Bayou — alas, it stopped working years ago).

The first person to be honored on the walk will be David Gockley, who led the Houston Grand Opera for 35 years. Gockley was chosen by a committee, which is how we assume future honorees will also be picked. It seems appropriate that Gockley will be commemorated outside the Wortham (at least we assume he will), the HGO's home. His "star" should be completed late next year.

So we're wondering: What other people and events should be part of the Houston Walk of Fame, or whatever it ends up being called? Let us know what you think.
