Today’s high temperature should reach 80F, which is close to the record of 81F set on Dec. 27, 1971. For reference, the hottest day recorded for the month was 85F on Dec. 2, 1995 (which tied a previously set record). Remember, this measurement is taken at the airport. It’s quite likely that you could see temperatures as high as the mid 80s in certain parts of Houston.
All of this is due to a pesky high-pressure system that has formed to our east. In the Northern Hemisphere, air around high-pressure moves clockwise (cyclonically) and air around low-pressure moves counter-clockwise (anti-cyclonically). Thus, this high-pressure system is moving in warm air from the south.
How long will this last? Not too long. A "cool" front will move in overnight and bring the highs down into the low to mid 70s through at least early next week.
