Longtime weathercaster Roland Galvan, formerly on the air in Houston, died Sunday in San Antonio after suffering from liver problems for about two years.
While he was attending college at Trinity University in San Antonio, Galvan got a job at a local TV station as a technician, photographer and news producer. He later trained to be a weatherman and ended up working for stations across the country: in Beaumont and Houston, then San Francisco and Los Angeles, and finally in Corpus Christi. "Our generation got into broadcasting at a time when there were few Hispanics in the business," WOAI meteorologist Maclovio Perez, a longtime friend of Galvan's, told The Associated Press. "We should be very proud of what Roland was able to accomplish in major markets across the country."
Galvan was on KTRK from the mid-1980s through the early '90s and then worked for KPRC for a while before leaving for California. He's survived by his father, brothers and his 23-year-old son Jeffery.
