Lasagna and bocce ball

Houstonist loves Italian food -- especially when it’s authentic and nestled in a 68 year old cottage in the Sixth Ward. Over the holidays, we treated ourselves to some of the best homemade lasagna in town and a bottle of Pinot Noir at Patrenella’s. It rivals Josephine’s as the best reasonably-priced Italian restaurant in town.

Since there is no host or hostess, you seat yourself where you like. We decided to try the patio, which is surrounded by Plumeria. While it was crowded inside, we had the patio to ourselves (it’s funny how 65 degree weather scares some Houstonians). We’re going back in the spring to take advantage of their bocce ball court. (If you’re looking for another place to play bocce ball without the food, we recommend Hans' Bier Haus near the Rice Village)

Most menu items are between $10 and $20, but you can also try their off-menu items, which chef Andre Pintus will be happy to tell you about. Our vegan friends recommend the eggplant. The wine list is about average.

True, the service can be spotty, but this isn’t the Olive Garden. It’s like having your Mom cook for you, and you don’t want to cross her.

Patrenella’s, 813 Jackson Hill, closed Sundays and Mondays.
