We focus on the local scene this time – mainly because the national acts are staying away from Houston this week. That’s not necessarily a bad thing :
Wednesday
Jason Allen’s tale is not much different from other Texas country artists: born in a small East Texas town, grew up listening to Hank Williams, wrote songs in Nashville – got fed-up, moved back to Texas, toured constantly, and is now a Gruene Hall favorite. You can catch him tonight at the Firehouse Saloon (which is kind of like Gruene Hall with a freeway next to it).

Thursday
One listen to Petesimple and you’ll instantly hear their main influences -- Dave Matthews and Jump Little Children. Lead singer Pete Lippincott divides hit time writing lyrics, producing records for others and playing regularly at Helios. After some critical acclaim outside of the state, Petesimple secures their own show at the Duck.
8 p.m. at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck | tickets and info
Friday
If you want to hear what some of the larger independent record labels (oxymoron?) are pushing now, make your way to the Meridian’s Record Label Showcase. Houston rock will be well represented with Spiracell, Dine Alone and Prognosis. The “made for corporate alternative rock radio” band Faktion will also be playing.
8 p.m. at the Meridian | tickets and info
Saturday
Beans Barton and the Bipeds bring their blues-rock to Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar. The Houston band has been together for 14 years and you know it’ll be a good show when the band members wear costumes, paint during the show, and have names like Dead Earnest and Bass Slackwards.
10 p.m. at Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar | tickets and info
