Rain, sleep deprivation, trucks don't mix

011706_bigwreck.JPGYou get a little rain, you get sleep-deprived drivers on the road, and you end up with an 18-wheeler wedged underneath a downtown overpass. Happens every time.

It happened around 2am along the main lanes of I-10 westbound near San Jacinto when a tractor-trailer plowed into the wall underneath an overpass and become wedged underneath it.

Investigators say the slick roads from the rain overnight contributed to the single-vehicle wreck. Also, they believe the driver may have been somewhat sleep-deprived.

The big rig's driver had to be cut from the cab of the vehicle. We're told he had some cuts, but was conscious when he was taken away by ambulance.

Pictures from the wreck do look bad — there are wheels and bits of trailer in places they just shouldn't be. It took crews about three hours to clear the the mangled truck out of the way, so everything was moving again by rush hour. (The driver managed to climb out of the truck's cab and is now in the hospital.)
