Caught on tape: Stupid teens in crime spree!

020206_crimespree.jpgThis week in stupid, 11 teenagers have been arrested for a two-month crime spree that they videotaped for posterity. The teens drove through their neighborhoods in North Shore and Woodforest knocking down mailboxes, shattering car windows and damaging random things — and capturing all 24 incidents on tape.

"It seemed like there was very little remorse in any of their actions -- that they were having such a good time. It didn't seem like anybody involved gave an after-thought that they were actually affecting other people's lives," said Sgt. Terry Wilson of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators have four hours of film documenting crimes from felony criminal mischief to aggravated assault with a motor vehicle (which seems to indicate they got into a little more than smashing people's mailboxes and car windows). The tape hasn't been released, but KPRC reported one specific incident in which the group threw a brick through the back window of one woman's car and smashed its taillights, causing $3,800 in damage.

The story leaves Houstonist wondering exactly what one would do with videotape of oneself and one's friends committing a bunch of small-scale crimes. Was it something to show at parties? Something to pop in when they'd already seen the afternoon's episode of Saved By the Bell? Maybe they were hoping to sell the footage to the producers of the new crime drama CSI: North Shore. We guess people are telling the truth when they say it's hard to break into TV.
