Houston police are cracking down (again) on public sex in Memorial Park, and they've caught five men in "compromising positions" in the past few days.
Officers caught one of the men engaging in a sexual act inside a restroom hidden in the trees."It doesn't really surprise me. I know some things are going on, but I've never seen it, never heard from anyone that has seen it," runner Kari Osnes told KPRC Local 2.
Investigators said the perpetrators are usually men looking for anonymous sex with other men. They said some of the men who have been caught are married.
Police said people caught engaging in sexual activity in public places face up to a year behind bars and a $1,000 fine.
As KPRC's Ryan Korsgard said, most of the sexual activity takes place between the ballfields and the railroad track on the west side of the park; Houstonist has heard stories of men soliciting sex along the bike paths and even near the jogging trail, which is probably the most public section of the park. Officers reportedly caught one man engaging in a sex act in a closed restroom in the park — but wait: just one? Why not do that at home?
(For your enjoyment, see these video reports on the problem from KPRC and KHOU, both of which seem more like TV news parodies than anything.)
