Boyfriend was kidnapper in car-chase case

More details today on the high-profile car chase that shut down the North Freeway yesterday: The kidnapped woman and her 4-year-old daughter involved in the chase were release from the hospital and are fine, but investigators are still piecing together the details of the bizarre case.

020306_crash.jpgIt all started about 2 p.m. Thursday. Police in DeSoto issued an Amber Alert for 4-year-old Kiara Renee Allen and an endangered person report for her mother, Andrea Nichole Allen, after Allen's mother reported the pair missing. Police suspected Allen's boyfriend, Jeremy Roberson, was the kidnapper — they called Allen's cell phone and talked to Roberson, who wouldn't let officers speak to Allen. Meanwhile, the Allens and Roberson were headed south on I-45 in Allen's white Dodge Neon, which caught the attention of local police in Willis. A police chase, with Allen driving the car at gunpoint, ended on the North Freeway near Crosstimbers when the car crashed into the back of a pickup and veered off into the grass alongside the freeway. Andrea Allen either jumped or was thrown from the car and Roberson, who had reportedly fired on officers giving chase, was shot — but police don't know yet whether he died from the gunshots or from the car crash. (Police pulled Kiara, the child, from the car.)

The southbound North Freeway was shut down for hours as investigators checked out the scene. Now police are trying to figure out why Roberson, who was described as a hard-working, level-headed guy, kidnapped his girlfriend and led her on the chase.
