Best of the independents to close

Some sad news for music lovers came over the weekend, when we learned that Cactus Music & Video is scheduled to shut its doors for good at the end of March. Cactus has been in operation for over 30 years and is the largest independent record store in Houston.

The decision came not because of sluggish sales (although, we all know that CD sales are slipping while digital sales continue to boom), but because of the owners retiring. The owners have been unsuccessful at finding interested buyers for the store.

Cactus’ closing will hurt local and regional artists the most. For many years, it has been the only place to purchase CD’s from local artists like Arthur Yoria and Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers, and has also specialized in the largest selection of Texas music.

Houstonist now questions where we’ll go to browse for hours on end for cool new music? In true modern day fashion, there’s already a tribute website setup for Cactus.
