Newborn baby found in apartment mail room

Houstonist has heard the stories about babies being left on people's doorsteps and in trash cans, but the baby who was left in an apartment complex's mail room was a new one on us. It happened at the Haverstock Hill Apartments in north Houston.

“Doctors think she was about a day old, and they think she must have been a home delivery because she had her umbilical cord tied with a rubber band,” said Estella Olguin with Children’s Protective Services. “She didn’t have any kind of visible trauma.”

The baby girl was found Saturday around 11 a.m.

Tony Artis heard the commotion.

“I think it’s pretty messed up that somebody would leave their child in the mailbox [room] like that,” Artis said.

The baby is in good condition (and, thankfully, wasn't mailed anywhere), but authorities are looking for her mother because the baby was left in an unsafe environment. Child Protective Services wants to find out if the baby's father knows he's a father or if there's any other relative who might want to take care of the child. If they can't find anyone, the baby will be put up for adoption.
