Houstonist prepares for pinewood derby, drinks beer

Your brave and daring Houstonist writers are hoping that entering a pinewood derby contest will raise our profile in the community, at least among the Eagle Scout demographic. The specific contest we've entered is the predictably inappropriately named Morning Wood Derby, hosted by The Buzz’s own Rod Ryan.

Though we’re not certain we’ll win, we do have a good feeling that we’re going to have some fun and we hope you’ll join us:

Official Weigh-in Party
Sherlock’s, 10001 Westheimer Road
5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16

Derby Day
Kicks Indoor Soccer, 611 Shepherd Drive
1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18

Below the jump, some pictures from our first weekend of work.

STEP ONE

Eric grilled up some burgers, because you shouldn't sand on an emtpy stomach.

STEP TWO

You should identify all of the pieces. This small block of wood will soon become a work of art.

STEP THREE

Trust us, get the right tools. Here, Josh is trying to saw with a drill.

STEP FOUR

Having abandoned the drill, Josh and Eric try a freaking huge saw.

STEP FIVE

Jim and Eric attempt to build our own pinewood derby race track out of cardboard boxes.

STEP SIX

Having driven to the store to get the right tools, Josh has shaved the car down into something that looks pretty fierce (at least before we drill holes in the top for the weights).

STEP SEVEN

In testing, our car is so fast (or our track is so poorly designed) that it goes off the track and often tumbles. It looks cool, but may not be the winning strategy.

If you have any tips on how to make our car faster, please drop us a comment. We need them. Badly.
