Mary Gauthier released her critically-acclaimed CD Mercy Now last year, and if you’ve heard it, you know how wonderfully dark and personal it is. The forty-something Louisiana native brings her haunting whiskey-ridden voice to the Duck tonight. When you hear her sing “I Drink,” it will sober you up quick.

Colorado’s Big Head Todd & the Monsters are still touring on their 2004 CD Live at the Fillmore. Actually, they're probably just chugging along on the strength of their excellent 1993 CD Sister Sweetly (remember “Broken Hearted Savior”?), but that’s fine with us; they are still a great live band.

Ah, we’re getting close to Valentine’s day – why not have your sweetheart serenaded by Paul Anka singing “You’re Having My Baby”? Anka joins the Houston Symphony for three shows (through Sunday) at Jones Hall. Expect to hear some of his famous compositions like Sinatra’s “My Way” and Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady.” Houstonist would love to hear him sing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” off his new Rock Swings CD.

Saturday
So you liked what you read in Houstonist’s interview with Tody Castillo? Then we got a three-for-one deal for you. Tody joins fellow Houston songwriter Arthur Yoria and Washington native Andy Zipf for a show at the art gallery/theater/bar Helios. The music will be good and the venue is ultra-hip.
9 p.m. at Helios, downstairs | info
Speaking of art, tonight is also the finale for The Beats of Basquiat at the Museum of Fine Arts. What makes this month’s party special? Grandmaster Flash. He’ll be performing along with other DJs at the museum. Houstonist has enjoyed the previous performances, and we know this one won’t disappoint either. You can also catch a midnight showing of the eighties classic Sixteen Candles.
