New name for Houston 1836?

021406_1836out.jpgKHOU is reporting this afternoon that Houston 1836, Houston's new pro soccer team, may be getting a new name under pressure from local Hispanic leaders:

Sources told 11 News that after pressure from the Hispanic community the name “Houston 1836” will be changed.

1836 is the year Houston was founded, but it is also the year Texas declared its independence from Mexico.

For many Mexican-Americans 1836 represents the year thousands of their forefathers lost their lives and their land.

Officials for the Major League Soccer team will not confirm the name change, but they did say they would have a major announcement within the next week.

Few details are available at this point, but KHOU reports its sources said there's a strong possibility the new name will be "Lone Star," one of the choices in the franchise's naming contest (though it showed up as one word in that contest).

Houston has never been crazy about the name, but we don't really understand the extent to which people have been offended by it. FOXSports.com has pro and con columns on the name today, if you're interested. More on the story as it develops.
