New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and challenger Mitch Landrieu are planning to make campaign stops in Houston soon, where they expect to talk to displaced voters and possibly even hold debates, KHOU reports.
Nagin, channeling Abraham Lincoln, told Channel 11 that he doesn't think voters "[are] looking to change horses in the middle of the stream." But some voters might be looking for a change, particularly considering Nagin's post-Katrina stumbles. The would-be new horse is Landrieu, the lieutenant governor of Louisiana and brother of Sen. Mary Landrieu. Their dad, Moon Landrieu, was New Orleans' last white mayor, serving from 1970-78. In his time with KHOU, Landrieu called Nagin "an average mayor" and got a little worked up when his mother drove by:
"Hey mom! How are you doin'? You're on microphone so don't say anything silly. How are you? Nice to see you. This is my mom, Verna Landrieu," said Lt. Gov. Landrieu.
It's not clear how, when or where the candidates will meet with displaced voters here, but Nagin indicated he'll be in Houston as early as the end of this week.
