'Why does my bank statement smell like bananas?'

030906_dumpster.jpgYesterday we talked about how some Visa check card holders' personal information might have been compromised, and today there's news of personal bank records found in a Dumpster in The Woodlands. Is nothing sacred? Was Houstonist's mom right when she told us to keep our savings under our mattress?

The stack of Wachovia papers were found in a construction Dumpster at Six Pines and Woodlands Parkway, next to a Wachovia branch. The documents included customers' names, Social Security numbers and account information — and it's the second time construction manager Ron Smith has found such papers in the trash. Though Wachovia said it's investigating the incident, the bank pointed out that the documents actually dealt with customers at another branch, not the one next to the Dumpster. That's not really comforting information — in fact, it makes the whole thing a little more confusing. Unless, of course, it's a new filing system Wachovia uses. Genius!

As Smith told KTRK, anyone could fish such papers out of the Dumpster. We wouldn't be surprised if they already did.
