Did you know that it's illegal to be publicly intoxicated in a bar? Well, brush up on the law, because TABC is coming after all you drunk folks in watering holes.
Operation "Last Call" is officially designed to reduce the number of DWI offenders as well as encourage licensees to be responsible providers of beverages. Since August, when TABC announced it was going to begin an iron-fisted enforcement of public intoxication, more than 2,200 people have been arrested in sting operations. The primary target of these stings: bars. According to TABC spokeswoman, people arrested have included people who were drunk in bars (imagine that), drunk employees on premises where they're liscensed to sell alcohol and people who have sold alcohol to a drunk person. To Houstonist, a bar seems like a really good place to find drunk people in public. But after we thought about it for a while, re realized that we were often those drunk people. Aarrrghh!
We have to admit, we're still a little shocked over the possibility of being arrested for drinking. So we've come up with a plan of action to help decrease our chances of arrest, and we encourage you to follow it, too: Decrease actions that call attention to yourself, i.e., screaming across the bar or knocking things or people over; stop passing out in public places; don't urinate/vomit in public; and always have a designated driver (or take a cab, a bus or the MetroRail). Yep, life is tough.
