Illegal refreshment?

032806_mexicoke.jpgSometimes it seems like there's something wrong with everything we enjoy. Latest example: Some Mexican Coke may be illegal. (We're talking about Coca-Cola, by the way, not anything else you might be thinking of.)

Mexican Coke is made with beet or cane sugar rather than the high fructose corn syrup that's used in American Coke. It makes Mexican Coke taste much better, in the same way that Dublin Dr Pepper is better than the Dr Pepper you can pick up at the store. It's hard to describe, but once you try it, you understand. At any rate, the popularity of Mexican Coke has led many vendors to bring the beverage across the border and sell it themselves — which doesn't sit well with Coca-Cola bottlers, who say they're losing millions of dollars in sales.

There's no word on what Coke bottlers might do to curb the flow of smuggled Coke — maybe come out with a black cherry vanilla version? Better stockpile the real thing, just in case.
