Man shoots someone on bus, takes refuge in church

040606_metrobus.jpgWhat is it with Metro buses and danger lately? Last week there was the story about the guy who refused to get off a bus and threatened the driver, and today we have news of a man who shot another man in the head on a bus last night. It happened just before 8 p.m. on a Metro bus near the Gulf Freeway and Broadway; the gunman reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot the unidentified man in the head, then calmly walked off the bus and went to a nearby Methodist church, where the pastor kept him until police arrived.

It's not clear yet why the shooting took place; police were still interviewing the other passengers on the bus when the news broke last night. Park Place United Methodist Church pastor Chick Cullen gave an interview to KHOU today (see unedited video of the interview), but he didn't say the suspect told him why he'd shot the other man.

Cullen ... calmly talked and held the man until others in the church could call police. "I needed to hold onto him and keep him in a place where he was safe and secure," he said.

But when the police arrived Cullen said the man started to become more agitated as if he might flee the scene.

That is when he told the man, "God's gonna forgive, but you've gonna have to pay the price for this."

The victim, who is in his 20s, in in critical condition at Ben Taub.
