Police seek help in working out West Loop crash

040706_wreck.jpgHPD is seeking help in working out details of the multi-vehicle pileup that closed the West Loop yesterday. Anyone who saw the accident should call 713.247.4072 and share any information they might have.

The wreck happened about 12:45 p.m. Thursday when the driver of Lincoln Town Car headed north on the West Loop tried to exit onto the Katy Freeway, but ran into impact barrels on the exit ramp. A flatbed truck hit the car and landed on the concrete barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes of the Loop; portions of the truck hung over both sides of the freeway. Two drivers in the southbound lanes hit the truck: A woman in a Toyota Camry, who was injured, and a 19-year-old man driving a Chevy Cavalier, who was killed. An 18-wheeler in the northbound lanes hit the front of the truck, portions of which burst into flames.

Police investigators are still figuring out what tickets or charges could be issued. KPRC reports investigators think it was speed, not freeway construction, that triggered the accident.
