Fun with Dick and Jane: Directed by Dean Parisot, starring Tea Leoni, Jim Carrey, Alec Baldwin. Open letter to Jim Carrey: Please stop making these torturing, face-contorting at weird angles, ills of suburban sprawl, silly films and return to the days of your Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Majestic brilliance. Please? Basically this 1970s remake is about a man who looses his job and fears his cushy lifestyle will disappear as well so he and his wife resort to robbery. Baldwin plays the immoral boss, who is eerily similar to the corporate corruption Houstonians know so well.
An Unfinished Life: Directed by Lasse Hallstrom; starring Jennifer Lopez, Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman. This is the first movie in a long time that we didn't have to do an imdb search to find the primary cast. Regardless of the seasoned actors, however, An Unfinished Life received mixed reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Some reviewers called it "mechanical" (Dallas Morning News), while others christen it a "highly satisfying work" (Film Journal International).
Wolf Creek: Directed by Greg McLean; starring John Jarratt, Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi. McLean's film is a campy horror flick set in the Australian Outback. The "true story" revolves around a similar plot as American horrors like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wrong Turn--a group of teenagers find themselves chased by a psychotic killer in the middle of nowhere--except the for film's unfamiliar backdrop and few unconventional surprises.
Ellie Parker: Directed by Scott Coffey, starring Naomi Watts, Mark Pellegrino, Chevy Chase. This indie film premiered at Sundance and now all the little people can see it. Watts' character is a determined wannabe actress struggling to survive in Hollywood. The film is a comedy, but Watts seems to channel some darker, more serious part of herself for this role, as she was once a starving actress struggling in Hollywood as well.
The Greatest Game Ever Played: Directed by Bill Paxton; starring Shia Labeouf, Matthew Knight, Stephen Dillane. Although we admit we haven't seen it, we aren't that impressed by this Walt Disney story of the 1913 US Open (that's golf) that details Francis Quimet's (Labeof) defeat of Harry Vardon (Dillane). We were impressed that Bill Paxton (Twister) is directing, though. Who knew?
