Westheimer Block Party

060428-wbp.jpgHoustonist remembers the old days of the Westheimer Street Festival, when lower Westheimer was closed for most of the weekend while freaks locals took over the street, selling crap you don’t need art, playing music, showing off their boa constrictors around their neck, and providing beer for visitors.

Those days are gone, but the Houston Free Press is working to keep the spirit alive with the Westheimer Block Party. Rain or shine (which, unfortunately, looks like it’ll be rain), the party begins at 1 p.m. near Westheimer and Taft. There’ll still be plenty of music (on four different stages), art, food, beer and people with snakes around their necks — just like old times!

It will also give you a celebrity sighting opportunity: Winona Ryder will be the honorary block captain. Which reminds us: If you're setting up shop at the block party, you might want to make sure your goods are secure if Winona comes around.
