Checking In With The Justice System

hpd smiling.jpgThe smiling cops in the picture might give you that warm and fuzzy safe feeling, but Houstonist’s trolling for news uncovered a sobering moment courtesy of Houston's finest: homicide investigators reportedly showed a child-sized casket they’d specially picked up for the purpose to parents of missing Kendrick Jackson , age 3, and told them that the coffin was the next place they’d likely see their son.
Kendrick’s mother, who is not a suspect in his disappearance, burst into tears.

The judge in the case against Kendrick’s father--who has been detained in connection with the missing boy--was so shocked at the alleged interrogation tactic that he used an expletive, reportedly exclaiming “Jesus!”.
Local activist Quanell X is doing his best to draw media attention to the case, and is planning a gathering today at his south Houston HQ to confer with other community leaders about HPD’s action.

Once Kendrick Jackson’s father gets past the cops and into custody, Harris County jail’s no bed of roses either: in fact, it may not be a bed at all, since the place is so overcrowded that inmates sleep on the floor, sometimes even near toilets. The county has been noncompliant with regulations on crowding for more than three years running, and the ACLU is gearing up for a battle like the one in 1995, when Harris County was forced to spend millions in jail renovation.
