Oh, crap

050906_poop.jpgHoustonist's out-of-town friends have long chided us about what a crappy town we live in. And statistically, we guess they're right, sort of: According to a national survey, Houstonians are the nation's worst at scooping their dogs' poop. Well, there go the 2016 Olympics.

The survey, conducted by animal health company Merial, was meant to promote awareness of health threats that come from failing to pick up after your pet (hookworms and roundworms can be found in the poop and can infect nearby animals and humans). The results ranked the top 15 markets based on an analysis of 350 respondents from each market — a mix of dog owners and people who don't have dogs. The people surveyed were asked their perceptions regarding how often dog owners in their cities scooped poop, which seemed odd to us at first, but then we realized it would be kind of hard to actually go count piles of poop in each town. But hey, it would be a better job than some Houstonist has had.

In the survey results, Houston was deemed least likely to pick up its poop, followed by Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix and Seattle. Chicago, L.A. and San Francisco were the best at cleaning up after their pets. Oddly enough, a separate national survey found that Americans think New Yorkers are the best poop-scoopers (NYC actually came in sixth in the findings) and that Detroiters are the worst (the Motor City landed in the middle of the rankings, at seventh).
