Severe weather headed for Houston

051006_rain.jpgA band of fierce storms that ripped through North Texas last night could produce some bad weather in Houton tonight. The storms are traveling with a cool front that should lower the temperatures just a bit Thursday.

"As this front approaches southeast Texas, I think it will be getting into our far northern counties," [KHOU meterologist David] Paul said. He said the severe weather would possibly start around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. and would move to the coast between that time and about 8 p.m.

"I expect the severe weather threat will come from large, damaging hail and gusty downburst, damaging winds," Paul said.

In North Texas, tornadoes were reported around 10:30 last night in Collin and Grayson counties. The storm packed high winds, lightning and golf ball-sized hail; it sheared off the tops of trees, destroyed houses, killed at least three people and injured 10. According to the National Weather Service, when the front hits our very warm, very wet coastal air, it'll likely produce strong thunderstorms, with potentially high winds and damaging hail. The forecast calls for really nice weather tomorrow — sunny skies with a high of 83.
