If you were out of town yesterday and missed our fantastic Memorial Day weather, there's good news: We might have an encore today! Warm, moist coastal air have led the National Weather Service to forecast a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, and a flood watch is in effect until 4 p.m. for the Houston area. Because rain yesterday saturated the ground and raised water levels in the bayous, we could see more serious flooding today — but then again, maybe we won't. If there's one thing we've learned about Houston weather, it's that we haven't learned much of anything.
Yesterday's storms, which dumped record amounts of rain on parts of the city, washed out Memorial Day events, caused minor street flooding and sent Halls Bayou out of its banks. In Kemah, a poice sergeant dived into the water to rescue a man and his 4-year-old son, who were trapped in a boat near the end of a pier. Even with the storms, we're about 2 inches behind the normal rainfall for this time of the year, NEW meterologist Mike Castillo told the Chronicle.
