Police arrest man who hit mother, son in Richmond

060606_handcuffs.jpgThe Herald-Coaster is reporting this afternoon that Richmond police have arrested the man who ran into a mother and her son yesterday outside the kid's elementary school. Interestingly enough, the man gave police a fake identity at the accident scene: — he initially told authorities he was 41-year-old David Cantu, but they found out he's actually 38-year-old Jim Cantu, of Rosenberg. We imagine Cantu is kicking himself right about now: "Why didn't I give them a fake first and last name? They never would have found me then!"

Cantu was arrested Monday afternoon on three Richmond traffic warrants and a felony warrant for non-support from a Fort Bend County court. Richmond police will also charge Cantu with a failure to identiy charge for having forgotten his age and first name.

The accident happened Monday morning outside Pink Elementary in Richmond as 23-year-old Monica Olvera was walking her son, 7-year-old Julian, to summer school. Cantu, also on his way to the school to drop his daughter off, lost control of his Jeep, drove into a ditch, struck a culvert, went airborne and hit the Olveras before landing on two parked cars. Monica Olvera threw herself between the car and Julian and took the brunt of the impact; she is recovering from surgery in fair condition at Memorial Hermann. Julian was released from OakBend Medical Center in Richmond yesterday.
