A committee studying crash statistics at Houston intersections has picked the first 10 locations for our new red-light camera system, which is scheduled to be up and running this summer — and all but two of them are outside the Loop.
The first intersections to be monitored by cameras will be Travis at Webster and Elgin at Milam in Midtown; Bay Area Boulevard at El Camino Real in Clear Lake; Bellaire at Fondren, Bellaire at Wilcrest, Hillcroft at Harwin, Hillcroft at Westpark and Richmond at Dunvale on the southwest side; Bingle at Pinemont on the northwest side; and John F. Kennedy at Greens near Bush Intercontinenal Airport. The committee decided those were the city's most dangerous intersections; at least four more groups of 10 cameras will be installed at more intersections (to be named later) this fall.
According to the Chronicle, the first 10 cameras will be installed in July, but we'll have a one-month grace period before $75 civil violations will start being issued. City Council approved the system, to be installed by Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions, last week.
