Transplanted Houstonian Stephanie reads Phillyist all the time and thought coming home for the summer would be a ton more fun if we started our version of one of their features: a list of things to do each week on the cheap. Everything on this list'll be $10 or less, so we're calling it "Fun for a Hamilton". Thanks for the idea, Stephanie ... enjoy!
Friday, June 9th
Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries, will sign and discuss her first adult mystery, Size 12 Is Not Fat, at Murder By the Book (2342 Bissonnet) @ 6pm. To order a signed copy, call the bookstore or email order@murderbooks.com
Saturday, June 10th
Karaoke at Azteca's (2207 Richmond Ave. @ Greenbriar) from 6-10 pm. $2 margaritas, $1 drafts, $5 pitchers, but the show's for all ages.
Sunday, June 11th
Go see Texas Singer-Songwriter Kelly McGuire at Trader's Village Houston (7979 N. Eldridge Rd). He says he'll "make you smile, cry, tap your toes, kiss your guitar and call your Momma with his great storylines...", and the show is free (parking is $2). Show starts at noon.
Monday, June 12th
See a movie at The Angelika downtown (Bayou Place, 510 Texas Ave.). $6 will get you a ticket, popcorn, and a drink. (We call this "Cheap Date Night" — and we think we remember the Angelika does, too.)
Tuesday, June 13th
The AIH Poetry Reading Series continues tonight @ 7:30 pm at Borders River Oaks (corner of Kirby and W. Alabama). Hosted by Ken Jones, it will feature poets from UH-Downtown.
Wednesday, June 14th
Go see Houston Folk: African American Self-Taught Artists, a 70-work exhibit at Texas Southern University's University Museum (3100 Cleburn). Admission is free.
Thursday, June 15th
Watch local dance group Freneticore's new show, Bedlam. They're a cutting-edge modern dance group with a conscience--they've protested the Iraq war and explored George Orwell through performance art, including video and movement. Their latest show is a "modern urban-realist tale", and will take place at their theater (5102 Navigation) @ 8 pm. (we cheated, this one costs $12. But we think it'll be awesome anyway.)
