Coming to Midtown: another CVS

061206_cvs.jpgIn yesterday's Chronicle, Nancy Sarnoff had news of exactly what Midtown needs: another CVS. This one will be built on the southeast corner of Main and Elgin, right on the MetroRail line and a few blocks from the CVS at Gray and Bagby — and, more important, even fewer blocks from the new Walgreens at Smith and McGowen.

The store will be built on part (or all?) of the block bordered by Main, Elgin, Fannin and Stuart, which recently sold for an undisclosed amount. The most interesting thing on the block now is the little 1930s ex-hardware store (most recently a car wash) facing Elgin. We have the feeling it doesn't stand a chance — it would probably get in the way of the CVS parking lot or drive-thru. The CVS news has sparked some comment on the Houston Architecture Info Forum, where people don't seem too pleased that a suburban-style drugstore is one of the things being built on Houston's "signature street." Ah well.

Unrelated to any of this — well, tenuously, anyway — we were delighted to find the Moist Towlette Online Museum. What a treasure trove this Internet is!

Awesome, it's now a one minute drive to the drug store instead of a four minute drive to the drug store!

When I lived in DC, there was a CVS at 15th & P, 17th & P, and 19th & P. Three in a row, every two blocks. And one just a few blocks south of those. That was the most intresting one - it was open 24 hours and prostitutes who worked the nearby streets would always be in there buying cigarettes and Red Bull.
