In yesterday's Chronicle, Nancy Sarnoff had news of exactly what Midtown needs: another CVS. This one will be built on the southeast corner of Main and Elgin, right on the MetroRail line and a few blocks from the CVS at Gray and Bagby — and, more important, even fewer blocks from the new Walgreens at Smith and McGowen.
The store will be built on part (or all?) of the block bordered by Main, Elgin, Fannin and Stuart, which recently sold for an undisclosed amount. The most interesting thing on the block now is the little 1930s ex-hardware store (most recently a car wash) facing Elgin. We have the feeling it doesn't stand a chance — it would probably get in the way of the CVS parking lot or drive-thru. The CVS news has sparked some comment on the Houston Architecture Info Forum, where people don't seem too pleased that a suburban-style drugstore is one of the things being built on Houston's "signature street." Ah well.
Unrelated to any of this — well, tenuously, anyway — we were delighted to find the Moist Towlette Online Museum. What a treasure trove this Internet is!
