National Become A Soccer Fan Day

The US Soccer Team will make it's 2006 World Cup debut today, facing off against the heavily favored Czech Republic. The game starts promptly at eleven this morning on ESPN 2, so Houstonist is in a rush trying to fill in the numerous gaps in our soccer knowledge.

If you're having trouble summoning up enough patriotism to watch the game, or perhaps can't find most World Cup Countries on a map, there's plenty of media coverage to help you out. The Chronicle is doing their part by blanketing their homepage with World Cup Coverage. If you need more, and don't mind wading through the snazziness that is ESPN.com's Soccernet, you can read to your heart's desire about all of the participating countries.

If the avalanche of media isn't enough, perhaps you can use the game as an excuse to take an extra long lunch break. Personally, we'll be taking the low road, and will use our time thinking of ways to jeer Czech's top player Jan Koller. With a first name like that, we don't think it'll be too difficult.
