Free caf food? Sign us up!

061306_food.jpgYou know how kids just love cafeteria food? Well, now they can get it year round! And for free, too! Over 200 HISD schools are taking part in the HISD Summer Feeding Program. (It sounds like an ag program, doesn’t it?) Kids from age 1 to age 18 can get 2 free meals a day through June 28.

They don’t have to be enrolled in HISD summer school classes or have to show proof of age or income. The Chronicle wasn’t specific, but we assume that means you just show up at one of the participating schools to load up on meatloaf and those little smiley face potatoes.

Breakfast is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. And don’t worry about the kids being given unhealthy food. HISD will be having none of that! The meals are nutritionally analyzed to make sure the children get their vitamins and the correct number of calories.

Last summer, the program served almost 2.5 million free meals. To get in on it this summer, call the HISD Food Services Department at 713.924.2455 to find out which schools are participating.

Matty B of LST tested the food.

No wine list, though.
