Houstonist Flickr Group Photo Of The Day - Dandelion Fountain B&W

Dandelion Fountain B&W

It's one of our favorite fountains, Gus S. Wortham Memorial Fountain — aka the "dandelion fountion" — on Allen Parkway across from the American General Center. According to Glass Steel and Stone, the legend goes that Wortham, the head of American General, saw a similar fountain in Australia and decided Houston needed one. He tracked down the manufacturer of the Aussie version and found out it was none other than Houston-based Brown & Root. Whether or not that's true, the dandelion is always fun to look at: When it's on, it's a distinctive fountain, and when it's off, it looks like an enormous mid-century knickknack. And dogs love it.
