World Cup Craziness

]The stormy weather that passed through Houston earlier today may have been a blessing in disguise as couch potatoes everywhere were rewarded with two fantastic World Cup games.

In the biggest upset so far of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Ghana defeated the heavily-favored Czech Republic 2-0. Facing the same team that shredded the US Squad 3-nil, Ghana surprised the Czechs and the world scoring 2 minutes into the match. Ghana later sealed the deal on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.

Perhaps bolstered by Ghana's stunning upset, the US Team battled Italy's best to a 1-1 draw. The match featured 3 ejections, a bloodied Brian McBride, a slew of fouls, and a US Goal courtesy of Italian Defender Cristian Zaccardo's left shin. The US Team shined for much of the game and likely regained some respect after their dismal first appearance.

After today's results, the US's path to the 2nd round is crystal clear. If the US can overcome Ghana on Thursday, and the Italians prevail over the Czech Republic, the US will advance and soccer will remain in the spotlight stateside for a few more days.
