A judge ordered today that Ashley Paige Benton, the 16-year-old girl accused of stabbing teen Gabriel Granillo to death at a Montrose-area park June 6, will remain in jail because her attorney believes she's in danger. Today's hearing was the second time Benton's lawyer, Rick DeToto, has said Benton has received death threats and could be at risk if she's released.
Meanwhile, investigators say they're close to arresting other people in the fight, in which they say about two dozen teens — believed to be gang members — ambushed Granillo and two friends at the park, beating them with golf clubs, baseball bats and tire irons. HPD spokesman Sgt. Nate McDuell said the department can't release information about the investigation now, but he told the Chronicle that Granillo's brother Steven, 17, who was at the park, has been arrested for a probation violation related to an earlier auto theft attempt. The Granillo family says it believes Gabriel and Steven are linked to MS-13, a dangerous street gang active in Latin America and most U.S. states.
Another detention hearing for Benton will be held after 10 working days.
