Train derails off Highway 90

062706_railroad.jpgAt least a dozen Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight cars went every which way this afternoon when a train derailed in northeast Harris County. The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. near John Ralston Road and Highway 90. Details are still coming in; according to KHOU, one railcar full of plastic pellets went off a bridge into Greens Bayou and at least two others were carrying methanol, a flammable liquid.

No injuries are reported, but several miles of Highway 90 near the accident site were (and may still be) shut down. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the derailment. KHOU has raw aerial footage of the scene.

Update: The Chronicle reports that one of the cars carrying methanol has a small leak, but there are no plans to evacuate because the derailment happened in a sparsely populated area.
