Houston Group Seeks New Bayou City Bowl Game

football.jpgThe Houston Bowl held in January has been mired in financial problems and was gasping for air until Lone Star Entertainment, a company owned by the Houston Texans, decided to step in and try to rescue the game.

Lone Star and Harris County Houston Sports Authority president Billy Burge took their plans to Southern California yesterday to try to persuade the NCAA to keep the Houston Bowl alive. While Houston has hosted smaller bowls like the Bluebonnet Bowl in years past, the Bayou City has yet to secure any kind of long-term sponsorships or television arrangements that keep bowl games thriving.

Jamey Rootes, who runs Lone Star and works as the president of business development for the Texans, told ESPN 790 AM yesterday that they were looking into multiple television partnerships but didn't know what those would be. The same goes for a corporate sponsor.

The NCAA has given no timeline for when and if it will make a decision on the bid. The current format pairs a team from the Big 12 Conference against an opponent from Conference USA or the Big East, or Notre Dame. But, nothing is set in stone and, at least for now, Houston's bowl tradition is up in the air.
