Cat parts turn up at Durst judge's house

070206_cat.jpgSo on Thursday, the judge in Robert Durst's 2003 murder trial found the severed front legs and head of a cat in her yard. And who sprang to everyone's mind but Durst, the eccentric millionaire who has a history of chopping bodies up? Life can be so unfair that way.

Galveston Police Chief Kenneth Mack told the Chronicle that investigators don't know if the cat parts are related to the Durst case — whether Durst or someone connected with him might have left them, or whether it's someone else's idea of a joke. "At this point, we don't have anyone to look at on this," Mack said. "We're just working with what we have, and what we have is the partial remains of a dead cat." Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, said Durst wasn't in Galveston County last week and had nothing to do with the cat, but Judge Susan Criss didn't seem so sure. She said the arms and head were cleanly severed and had clearly been left at her door on purpose. "Draw your conclusion. A head was left in front of my house by someone who knew how to cut a head off," she told the Chron.

Police told Criss the cat parts will undergo more examination, including testing for the presence of human DNA. Criss said police are also providing her protection because of the incident, though she didn't specify what kind.
