Fourth of July, Houston style

There are many ways to celebrate Independence Day tomorrow in Houston:

Chevy’s Freedom Over Texas: The official Houston July 4th Celebration is at Eleanor Tinsley Park downtown. This year, the festivities include San Angelo's own Los Lonely Boys. They are definitely worth checking out. When we caught them a few years ago at SXSW, we thought these local boys would never make it past the Lone Star state, but thanks to the hit "Heaven," they did. On a less impressive note, the Village People will be opening. The event begins at 4 p.m. with the fireworks beginning around 9:30 p.m.

Star Spangled Salute: If you prefer live classical music accompanying a fireworks display, rather than a prerecorded Lee Greenwood song, then head to Miller Outdoor Theater. The Houston Symphony will perform many classics, including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture during the show. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m.

Rockets Red Glare: For those with kiddos, the celebration at the Children’s Museum may be the best bet. Plus, it’s indoors – perfect for this week’s weather. Kids will be able to design their own “fireworks” (fake, of course) and decorate floats for a parade. The museum will be open for July 4th celebrations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Astros vs. Cubs: What can be more American than eating hot dogs and watching baseball on July 4th? The fact that the Chicago Cubs are in town brings even more patriotism to it. Nevertheless, we hope our boys cream them. The game begins at 1:05 p.m.
