Planning to head to Galveston this weekend? You might want to avoid driving onto or off of the island Sunday morning as demolition begins on what's left of the old Causeway. Underwater blasting to demolish the old bridge's piers will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday; traffic on the remaining half of the old Causeway and the completed half of the new one will be stopped while the demolition is under way.
If you're a demolition fan, there's really no reason to head down to the coast: TxDOT's Norm Wigington said the blasts won't be visible above the water. The demolition marks the midpoint of a four-year, $136 million reconstruction project replacing the 1964 Causeway with new, wider bridges. Check out TranStar's Causeway construction cam to see what's going on now.

Missed Connections: Gefilte Fish...and "Chain Connections"

liars, damned liars! i forwent this because of this anrticle and the one in the galveston daily news - i should have known better than to trust them!
"With debris and fish raining down on the new bridge, the man responsible says it went almost perfect."
does it get any better than that?! also, the galveston daily news has a pretty neat picture on their front page.
That picture is amazing — I wonder what kind of lens the photographer used to capture those underwater blasts that weren't visible to bystanders?
I like how the Chronicle reported that "Observers will be stationed around the site to alert construction crews if sea turtles or other marine life wanders into the blast zone." I guess "other marine life" didn't include fish (but if they waited for all the fish to clear out, they'd never have blown anything up).
it's their super-duper-liar-lens...yes, i am bitter.
i noticed the picture on the front page has changed, so here is its more permanent home: demolition image
There's video on the KTRK site, but it was kind of stilted for me. That article only mentions the turtles, so I guess they weren't worried about anything else.
Although I was thinking even if the explosions were under water, surely you were going to see something above water. I mean the bridge was coming down!
