Galveston Causeway will be closed Sunday morning

Planning to head to Galveston this weekend? You might want to avoid driving onto or off of the island Sunday morning as demolition begins on what's left of the old Causeway. Underwater blasting to demolish the old bridge's piers will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday; traffic on the remaining half of the old Causeway and the completed half of the new one will be stopped while the demolition is under way.

If you're a demolition fan, there's really no reason to head down to the coast: TxDOT's Norm Wigington said the blasts won't be visible above the water. The demolition marks the midpoint of a four-year, $136 million reconstruction project replacing the 1964 Causeway with new, wider bridges.
