Weekend graffiti event draws criticism

070706_punchy.jpgSo we've heard a lot lately about the city's attempts to clean up graffiti. Given that, it's not surprising — kind of dumb, but not surprising — that a weekend graffiti-art event is ruffling some feathers.

The event is the Hawaiian Punch Graffiti Jam, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Southside Skate Park, 510 Iowa Ave. in South Houston. Professional graffiti artists will paint a mural and will teach all comers to do a little graffiti of their own, all amid a sea of DJ-spun music and Hawaiian Punch. And that's not sitting well with local businesses and some city officials, who don't want kids to learn how to paint graffiti at all.

Among the critics is City Councilman Michael Berry, who is trying to get Hawaiian Punch to cancel the event — no matter, we suppose, that it's an art thing and now a vandalism thing. We hope Berry doesn't hear about Aerosol Warfare.

Update: Hawaiian Punch called the event off after hearing about the criticism.
