Recommend local food, get $100

070806_wfm.jpgSo we're coming to this late, but it's still worth a mention: If you know of a locally produced food product that you think everyone else should get exposed to, tell Whole Foods Market and you could end up with an extra $100. It's part of WFM's Go Local program, which was announced last month, and here's how it works: If you find a local product Whole Foods doesn't carry, e-mail go.local@wholefoods.com with the poduct name, brand name and a brief description (of the item, not of yourself). If WFM puts the product on its shelves, you'll get a $100 store gift card. That'll buy a lot of organic peanut butter.

The Go Local idea is part of WFM's push to support local agriculture and producers. Also coming up are parking-lot farmer's markets at the chain's freestanding stores, loans for local, small-scale agricultural concerns and farms in developing countries, and education programs to let shoppers know about locally produced products.

Rich Connelly wrote about this marketing stunt weeks ago. Since he couldn't get anyone from Whole Foods to comment on the record, one assumes there's more stunt than substance behind this. But I'm sure it will make Whole Foods shoppers feel better.
