Thanks to the Chronicle's Shelby Hodge, we have an idea of what Ken Lay's first memorial service was like yesterday. The Lay family barred media from the Aspen, Colo., service, which we suppose is why the AP story was relatively short on details. But Hodge talked to some people who attended, and she got a pretty good idea of what went on.
Nearly 200 people attended the service, at which the Rev. Bill Lawson of Houston officiated. Lawson reportedly reminded the crowd that many people "who are vilified in life," including John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus, become heroes in death. That's pretty big company for the ex-Enron chairman, we'd say. Lawson also recited the Lord's Prayer and read from the Bible; there was organ music and a couple of hymns. Among the people in attendance at the Aspen Chapel were former Enron CEO and Lay's co-defendant Jeff Skilling and Skilling's lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli. The second of two memorial services for Lay is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in downtown Houston.
Also this weekend, the Chronicle gave us some details of Lay's last days, including an incident at an Aspen restaurant where fellow diners pointed at and made comments about Lay. Despite how people in the rest of the country may feel about Lay, the folks in Aspen (aside from those at the restaurant) seem to like him. And speaking of people in the rest of the country, they're still wondering whether Lay's really dead or is just pulling one over on everybody, according to a column in today's New York Times. Our favorite excerpt:
It was even suggested that the former executive had quietly assumed life as an alter ego, Dave Cummings, an aging but active star of pornographic films who is said by some to strongly resemble Mr. Lay."This makes sense," wrote Dave Roberts, the blogger who posited the theory, "as surely even Bruce Wayne would become Batman full time if Wayne Industries were to go bankrupt in an accounting scandal."
We had noticed the resemblance between Lay and Tim Conway, but never having seen Cummings before, we had no idea just how ... totally different they look. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go try to purge our mind of the thought of Ken Lay in porn. Ewww. (And yeah, if you missed it last week, that was the real NY Post cover from Thursday.)

Missed Connections: November 2 - 5

Did they remove Lawson from Lay's pocket before they buried him?
