Here's something we wish we'd seen while it was still up: In Midtown, someone covered a billboard with a homemade poster featuring Jesus holding a can of Budweiser between the slogans "King of Jews" and "King of Beers."
Given some of the more bizarre advertising we've seen lately, we wouldn't have been surprised if the sign was an actual ad — but the company that leases the billboard said it wasn't. Officials said they believe someone made the sign at home, then climbed up and pasted it over the ad that was supposed to be there. From what we can tell online, the work was pretty good, and passersby seemed to agree: "I thought that was just crazy," commuter Jose Cazares told KTRK. "It looks professional, too." (Check out the picture on Channel 13's website and see for yourself.)
The billboard was at La Branch and Winbern, just east of HCC's central campus. As of this morning, it's displaying a PSA for adoption — we guess having a story on TV makes the cleanup crews get to work pretty quickly. So we're sorry you can no longer see Jesus advertising beer, but we can point you toward the Bible in Legos, if that's any consolation.

Missed Connections: Gefilte Fish...and "Chain Connections"

This looks like the work of Ron English:

I love how channel 13 attributes it to graffiti. I think Ron just bought the board and placed the sign up legally.
You're right, it does look like his work — whatever the case, I don't think "graffiti" was the right word. I'm surprised they didn't try to pin it on a bunch of Hawaiian Punch-drinking juvenile delinquents.
