HPD looks for leak in sex-change story

071206_malefemale.jpgRemember last month when we talked about Sgt. Jack Oliver, the Houston police officer who's undergoing a sex change? When the story broke in mid-June, reports made it sound as though Oliver had decided to go to the media himself. As KPRC reported at the time:

"If I was injured on duty and medical treatment was given on the scene, the department and officers would find out that way and I didn't think that was fair," he said.

The deciding factor to announce his decision came when a fellow officer threatened to expose him.

"They are one of the people that totally disagree with what I'm doing and that's fine. I respect their decision," Oliver said.

But maybe that wasn't the way things went down after all: Now, KPRC says HPD is trying to find out who leaked the story to the station. Channel 2 reports that HPD's Internal Affairs Division is looking at 34 supervisors at the Fondren Patrol Division, where Oliver works; some of them have been asked to turn in their personal cell phone records so investigators can see whether they called KPRC.

Oliver's sex-change surgery is scheduled for next year. He said he plans to keep his job with the police force — except by then he'll be Julia Oliver, not Jack.
